When Forms Come Alive

This week I went to see ‘When Forms Come Alive’ at the Hayward Gallery in London. It finishes this weekend so if you are nearby, it’s worth popping in. A variety of international artists have contributed to this exhibition with sculptures made over the last sixty years, the theme of which focuses on movement and growth. A lot of the works had an organic feel to them, as though they might indeed be alive.

I felt very divided in my opinions of the work; some pieces I loved and some I really didn’t like at all. The best thing about all of them though was the variety of materials used to create them. Some of the materials I had never even heard of before, and if I had they were used in impressive and innovative ways to create unique artworks.

My favourite piece was this work by Tara Donovan. It was huge and mesmerising and I desperately wanted to touch it (to be honest, I wanted to touch most of the work as it was all very tactile!). It was called Untitled (Mylar). Mylar was the metallic material it was made from and it was assembled with hot glue. It was a very captivating piece, but my friends and I had three questions; how big is her studio, where is she going to put it after the exhibition, and how did she know when it was finished?

I’ve now been to two exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery and I would definitely return to see more, its much larger than you think it will be and there’s always another piece of art to discover around every corner!
