Kintsugi – Dotty by Design

Kintsugi is the concept of embracing imperfections and flaws to create an even more beautiful piece and is often associated with the mending of pottery using gold. This kit is from Dotty by Design, and I ordered it via the Indytute website. This was the at home Kintsugi repair kit that cost £38, but there are also workshops you can book on too. The at home kit includes an online tutorial that you can join, but I decided to just use the written instructions.

Included in the kit was:

  • Broken plate
  • Two-part epoxy resin
  • Liquid gold
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wooden mixing sticks
  • Paintbrush
  • Gloves

I found the written instructions very detailed and comprehensive, and there were good troubleshooting tips for if your resin didn’t set e.g. ensuring you had an exact 50/50 mix of the two-part epoxy, or not mixing too much gold into it. The first join I made seemed very straightforward but when I came to add do my second join the plate fell apart and I had to restart. I mixed a new bit of resin to be sure I had the ratio correct and I also tried to slow down. Although I felt like I’d taken my time and waited the right amount of minutes for it to set before moving on to the next piece, I decided to wait even longer to allow it to set more, practicing patience and mindfulness as the instructions suggest!

Eventually I got it to feel more secure and had the whole plate together. Painting more of the liquid gold over the top of the seams really gives it a finished look and I’m pleased with my first attempt at this art. I would definitely recommend listening to music or a podcast or audiobook whilst you do this if you are a bit impatient like me!
