Lampshade Making – Makerly

This lampshade making kit from Makerly was so much fun! I have made a lampshade before but on a much smaller scale, so doing a full sized one that could be used for a standing lamp or even a ceiling light was pretty cool.

Included in the kit was:

  • Lampshade frame (top and bottom)
  • UK lamp adaptor
  • Self-adhesive lampshade liner
  • Double-sided tape
  • Finishing tool
  • Fabric

It was a surprisingly quick craft to do. I had a completed lampshade in under an hour. It was also very easy to do, although the liner was already cut to size so there was no measuring involved. The trickiest part of the project was lining up the fabric and liner and then sticking the liner to the fabric without it shifting around. This was mainly made difficult by the liner wanting to curl back up on itself, but the use of a couple of heavy objects on either end helped a lot!

The photos in the instructions were really clear and easy to follow and the additional hints and tips on the back are worth reading before you get started. This kit is currently available on the Makerly website as a past box and costs £22. I’ve modelled my lampshade on a lamp we have in our home that has its own shade already, but I really like the one I’ve made so I think I will have to buy it a lamp of its own. I especially think it will look good down in my newly refurbished soon-to-be-ready-for-use studio!
