Paper Raffia Tote Bag

As it’s Mother’s Day today I thought I’d review this lovely flowery tote bag made with a kit from Craft Box Club. They are such a great craft subscription because of their dedication to being eco-friendly and plastic free. You can always tell when you open the box how hard they have worked to achieve this in each of their boxes.

Included in this kit was:

  • Natural jute tote bag
  • Paper raffia
  • Chalk
  • Needle

The idea was very simple; to embroider flowers onto the bag with the paper raffia. The design was very simple and organic so there was no skill needed, other than to poke the needle through the material! The knots to make the centre of the flowers were slightly trickier. They were a kind of variation on a French knot, but once I’d done a couple they were easy to do. The instructions are provided online as both written instructions with photographs and as a video, both of which are really easy to follow.

The hardest part of the project is stitching inside the bag. If you are able to use both hands, one inside and one outside the bag, that is really helpful and it will definitely save some arm ache. The jute can also be quite tough to get the needle through, especially when you thread a new length of raffia, but a bit of wiggling usually helps!

The project took a few hours to complete and has a lovely spring feel to it with the fresh colours of the pink and green raffia. It promises fun adventures to come like beach trips and picnics after this cold, cloudy weather has finally gone.
